Red Sox Bobby Jenks' discusses surgical error

by Administrator 23. February 2012 16:53

Bobby Jenks, a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, discussed for the first time his brush with death after a medical mistake during spinal surgery last December went unnoticed for days.

Jenks was admitted to the Massachusetts General Hospital in December to remove bone spurs on his spine. When he flew home to Phoenix after the surgery, he noticed fluid leaking out of the incision. He went to the doctor where he was told he would need an emergency surgery to fix the mistake.

The fluid that was leaking was spinal fluid, caused by doctors who serrated the third bone spur but did not finish. An infection grew in his spine, but fortunately doctors were able to treat it before it traveled to his brain. Jenks is not expect to play again until midseason.

Arsenic found in baby formula

by Administrator 17. February 2012 15:48

In a new study published by researchers at Dartmouth College, high levels of arsenic was found in some brands of organic baby formulas.

Arsenic is a carcinogen that could cause cancer and heart disease. For infants, high exposure to arsenic could lower their intellectual functions and lower their IQs. The source of the arsenic is organic brown rice syrup, a sweetener often used as a substitute for high fructose corn syrup.

Other foods that contained high levels of arsenic that researchers tested included cereal bars and energy shot drinks.

Parents die in car accident

by Administrator 10. February 2012 16:13

A husband, 47, and wife, 46, were killed earlier this month near Tiffin after their car hit a patch of ice, spun out of control, and struck a culvert.

The parents were on their way to their teenage son's wrestling meet when the accident occurred. Their 18 year-old daughter was also in the vehicle, but walked away with only minor injuries. The father was a co-pastor at Kalona Mennonite Church.

They leave behind four kids, ranging in age from 14 to 18. The children's aunt and uncle are expected to take them in.

Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of the victims.

Birth control error could cause unintended pregnancy

by Administrator 2. February 2012 14:49

Pfizer has issued a recall on nearly a million birth control pills after a mix up with placebos could cause women to become untintentionally pregnant.

The brand affected by the mix up is Lo/Ovral-38 and its generics norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol tablets. The defective packages have expiration dates between July 31, 2013 to March 31, 2014. Women who believe they have a defective package are stronly encouraged to start using non-hormonal birth control immediately.

It is common for placebos to be packaged with contraceptive pills, but when the sequence is out of order, as in this case, the contraceptives could become significantly weakened and pose an increased risk of pregnancy.
