Crew members missing in cruise wreckage

by Administrator 17. January 2012 15:26

At least four crew members on board the Costa Condordia that capsized Friday night are still missing, bringing the total missing to 25.

Italian rescue workers recovered five more bodies today, bringing the death toll to 11. However, it has not been confirmed whether the bodies were of passengers or crew members.

At least 60 individuals were injured when the luxury cruise liner crashed into the rocky ocean floor late last week, causing it to fill with water and capsize. About 3,200 passengers were on board with around 1,000 crew members. The captain of the ship is currently under house arrested and could be facing charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and leaving before everyone was evacuated.

The thoughts of lawyer Pete Leehey is with all those affected by this tragic event. For more information about the wreck, click here.

Mail carrier loses second round in legal battle

by Administrator 24. August 2010 13:15
Last week, a Cedar Rapids letter carrier who fell down some steps while on duty has lost another round in his legal battle against the owners of the property.

The incident occurred in November of 2005 when the carrier walked up the owners' driveway to deliver their mail to the mailbox. As he walked across their yard towards a nearby apartment complex, he fell down some steps.

About two years later he filed his lawsuit and it reached the courts in 2009. The carrier testified that he had slipped on those steps a number of times as well as asked the property owners to clear them several times before. The jury found the owners were at fault but not legally responsible for the injury.

The Court of Appeals has rejected the carrier's request for another trial.

Obama orders federal workplaces to improve employee safety

by Administrator 30. July 2010 09:33

Last week, President Obama signed an order asking all federal agencies to improve their safety standards and reduce injury and illness in their employees over the next four years.

By 2014, federal workplaces should have reduced the number of injuries a year, reduced the time it takes to review a claim, and sped up employees' returns to the workplace if they do become injured.

"Many of these work-related injuries and illnesses are preventable, and executive departments and agencies can and should do even more to improve workplace safety and health, reduce the financial burden of injury on taxpayers, and relieve unnecessary suffering by workers and their families," stated Obama.
