NTAB proposes phone ban for truck drivers

by Administrator 16. September 2011 15:27

The National Transportation Advisory Board has created a new proposal to ban all cellphone use for commerical truck drivers. The proposal stems from a fatal truck accident that occurred in March 2010. A truck driver was on his cellphone when he drifted over a median and hit a van head-on that had ten people inside. All the passengers and the van's driver were killed.

Currently, there are 34 states that have banned texting while driving, but the NTAB wants to ban all cellphone use, even hand-free technology like Blue Tooth. However, several truckers have argued that some cellphone use is necessary for their jobs. Communicating to their employers and customers is essential, some say. Truck drivers argue that if the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration approves of the proposal, that all motorists should have the regulations.
