A Goose Lake teenager has passed away after his motorcycle collided with a pick-up truck in Clinton County.

The motorcycle accident happened on Tuesday afternoon. The motorcyclist was riding on the south side of the 1300 block of 362nd Avenue when his bike crossed into the northbound traffic. This loss of control caused the 18-year-old to hit a pick-up truck head-on.

When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, the teen was pronounced dead. Police are still investigating what caused the motorcyclist to lose control of his bike.

Our thoughts are with the motorcyclist's family and friends.

Parents die in car accident

A husband, 47, and wife, 46, were killed earlier this month near Tiffin after their car hit a patch of ice, spun out of control, and struck a culvert.

The parents were on their way to their teenage son's wrestling meet when the accident occurred. Their 18 year-old daughter was also in the vehicle, but walked away with only minor injuries. The father was a co-pastor at Kalona Mennonite Church.

They leave behind four kids, ranging in age from 14 to 18. The children's aunt and uncle are expected to take them in.

Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of the victims.

NTSB proposes cellphone ban while driving

by Administrator 20. December 2011 13:31

The National Transportation Safety Board announced last week its recommendation to ban all cellphone and other portable electronics use while behind the wheel. Over the past few years, the number of fatalities due to drivers focused on their phones and not on the road has increased dramatically, which has concerned the board.

Last year, a 19 year-old caused a multi-car pileup that killed him a 15 year-old when he slammed into a stopped car at full speed. His cellphone records showed that he sent or received 11 text messages in 11 minutes right before the crash.

According to the NTSB's survery of 6,000 American drivers, half of all 21 to 24 year-olds questioned admitted to having sent text messages or emails while driving. A fifth of all the drivers questioned said they had sent messages while on the road.
