17-year-old boy killed in alcohol-related rollover crash

A 17-year-old Cedar Rapids teenager was killed last Monday morning in an alcohol-related rollover crash.

Authorities responded to reports of the accident around 1:40 AM Monday on Cottage Grove Avenue SE just west of 34th Street SE. Investigators determined that the driver of the car had lost control upon cresting the hill and lost control, resulting in the vehicle rolling over a number of times before striking a utility pole.

One of the passengers in the vehicle, a 17-year-old boy, suffered critical injuries and died in emergency care after being taken to St. Luke's Hospital and then University Hospital.

The 18-year-old driver of the car was charged for underage intoxication and public intoxication and taken to Linn County jail.
