Cantaloupes contaminated with listeria have been linked to thirteen deaths so far. All of the cantaloupes appear to have come from Jensen Farms and distributed all over the country. Eighteen states have confirmed a total of seventy-two residents with listeriosis.
The CDC expects this number to increase in the next few weeks since listeriosis can take several weeks to develop after being consumed. A federal investigation into Jensen Farms has begun in order to find the cause of the outbreak. Families have already starting filing lawsuits against the growers and the grocery stores the cantaloupes were purchased from.
Listeriosis symptoms include body aches, vomiting, high fever, and confusion. The elderly, pregnant woman, and young children are most susceptible to the infection.
